Canterbury Faire AS 50

Canterbury Faire AS50 was held over Thursday 14th to Friday 22nd January, 2016. It was held at The Boys Brigade Waipara (45-60 minutes from Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand) and it ran for 7 days. Twelfth Night and Coronation were held during Canterbury Friday 15th to Sunday 17th January. The event stewards this year were Mistress Isabel Maria del Aguila (Twelfth Night and Coronation) and Lady Elena Sophia di Luciano de Medici (Canterbury Faire). The official Canterbury Faire website, updated each year, is hosted by the Barony of Southron Gaard.

The event token for this event was a small metal mirror framed in wood.

Around the Site

Each and every morning, members of Draco Viridis (a household also known as the Green Dragons) baked fresh on site a large quantity of honey apple spice buns and sold them for two gold each. They were definitely a favourite breakfast item for Faire goers.

The Mangy Mongol, commonly referred to as “The Mong”, served Turkish coffee shots in small ceramic cups. This year the Mangy Mongol was under new management, and had expanded into a yurt-based empire. These changes were well received by the populace.

Up near the bunkrooms, Master Brian di Caffa placed a water fountain [different from last year but I need to obtain some more details and a pic].

The Markets

Two full markets were held throughout the event with a wide range of wares available.

Heavy Combat

Roses Heavy Tournament

On Sunday morning afternoon, a Roses Heavy Tournament was held. Each fighter chose their opponent, and the defeated presented a rose a person nominated by the victor.
There were approximately [x] entrants into the tournament and, after [x] rounds, [need to confirm if anyone was presented with a final prize for winning the tournament].

War

Wars were held Monday and Wednesday mornings. Monday morning was held in a new site across, and Wednesday was held in the old war field (due to the effects of rain on the new site), and both included heavies and combat archers.

Woods Battle

On Thursday, a Woods Battle was held whereby fighters progressed through the woods attacking and defending a series of choke points. [don’t think this happened due to the rain and may have actually been another War scenario on the old field]

Fighter Auction Tournament

On Wednesday afternoon, a Fighter Auction Tournament was held. The Fighter Auction was run as a silent auction where bidders did not know whom they were buying until after they were successful in purchasing a fighter. The victor on the day was x

Gods and Monsters Tournament

Fighters put on a persona of a God or a Monster and could not be killed in the conventional way – only the weakness of their persona could kill them (for example, if a fighter was Bilbo, perhaps they are unable to withstand a single blow – but their opponent must fight them blindfolded due to the effects of The One Ring!).

Rapier Melee / Valhalla Tournament

On Monday evening, approximately x fencers competed in several melees.

Cut and Thrust Tournament

On Monday morning, a Cut and Thrust tournament was held in the glade list field. The tournament ran for x rounds, and x was the ultimate victor of the tournament.

Baronesses Rapier Tournament

The Baronesses Rapier Tournament was held on Wednesday afternoon, sponsored by the Baroness of Southron Gaard – Baronessa Ginevra di Serafino Visconti. The rules of the list were no blade grasping and no hits below the knee [?]. It was a [lives] tournament with .
The victor of the tournament was x. x was presented with the perpetual sword trophy of the annual tournament charged to hold until next year where the tournament would be recontested.
The Queen, Her Majesty Bethony I, the Baroness of Southron Gaard, Baronessa Ginevra di Serafino di Visconti, and the Baroness of Ildhafn, Baroness Alyenora Brodier presented tokens to those fighters who had impressed them most with their courtesy, chivalry and valour.

Archery

Target Archery Results

Many target archery competitions were held throughout the event, and the winners announced in Closing Court were as follows:

    • Royal Round: x (period division) and x (open division).
    • Night Shoot: x.
    • Challenge Shoot: x.
    • Period Shoot: x (shortbow) and x (longbow).

Thorfyrd’s arrow

Each year at Canterbury Faire, a combat archery tournament is held and the victor is presented with the perpetual trophy of Thorfyrd’s Arrow.

The tournament involves combat archers being assigned a heavy combatant each and they shoot at the opponents heavy. It was a double elimination tournament. Baron Richard d’Allier was the victor on the day.

The Masked Coronation Ball

On the Sunday night, a Masked Coronation Ball was held in the hall at the top of the hill. It consisted of live musicians, x sets of dances, a light supper with cordials, and some elegant dance demonstrations.

Arts and Sciences

A wide range of Arts and Sciences classes were held throughout the event, ranging from heraldry to leatherwork to sewing to puppets to mechanisms and mazes. The timetable is available at the top of this page under ‘Event Information’.

Kingdom Arts and Sciences Championship

With Canterbury Faire incorporating Twelfth Night and Coronation, a Kingdom Arts and Sciences competition was held. The winners were x (Summer Accessories), x (Stone Working) and x (Things for fun).

Childrens Activities

A variety of childrens activities were run throughout the event, [trying to source a pic of the child’s timetable as it’s not on the site]

One these activities was the Childrens Boffer Tournament with various perpetual trophies being handed to children who entered, including Harry’s Helm (an award given for chivalry, named in honour of an enthusiastic page who was taken too young).

Have-A-Go

On Tuesday morning, have-a-go stations were set up for people to try their hands at heavy combat, rapier combat and archery. It ran for two hours and allowed people a hands-on go at activities they may not have had the chance to try before. A large number of people enthusiastically attended these various stations.

Court

During the various Courts held throughout the event, Her Majesty, Queen Bethony I was delighted to induct many younglings into the Mouse Guard.

During Closing Court, a number of perpetual Canterbury Faire trophies were handed out.

The best campsite trophy was awarded to the Ildhafn campsite. The trophy is a bottle of Baileys (a play on the phrase ‘better keeps and baileys’), which the campsite is charged to drink and return next year with a full bottle to award to their campsite of choice.

The Brewers Guild Competition for Reinheitsgebot was won by Master Pádraig Lowther for his Strong Beer, and the Guild Tasting winner [and the winner of the brewers mash paddle] was declared to be Mistress Isebail’s Elf Chilly Mead.

The bardic cup for best entertainment was given to x for beautiful and inspiring singing.
