On Saturday 21 June, 2014 (AS49) at Abbotsford Masonic Lodge (141 Gipps Street, Abbotsford, Victoria), Sir ThorolfR Brantsson and Her Ladyship Halla Vinagjafar Hrafnsdóttir were invested as the 9th Baron and 10th Baroness of Stormhold. The event was stewarded by Mevanwy Pengrek.
During the daylight hours there was a pas d’armes between fifteen heavy fighters in a list field that included a barrier. The barrier was made by Baron Hanbal al-Barbari in AS49, modelled from a similar example in Ildhafn (William, Katherina and Ludwig’s barrier design, as seen online).
Prior to the first of two melees, His Majesty Alfar of Attica fought individual members of the Order of Svallin (see Stormhold’s Baronial Awards descriptions) over the barrier until they were able to defeat him, allowing the melee to begin. The Order of Svallin and the Barony of Stormhold, along with Baron Hanbal and Sir Blethyn ap Gryffyd, held the barrier during two lots of five minute infinite resurrection melees.
Following the melees, there were also individual challenges made.
Their Excellencies appointed Their retinue and announced a challenge to the Barony of Stormhold to make diverse largesse to show off the skills of the Barony, culminating in a competition at the William Marshall event in December. This largesse will then be used as gifts by the Baron and Baroness throughout the Kingdom.
They also announced a new program for school-aged youth in the Barony. Children would be sponsored by an adult to become a Page and can earn various tokens by participating in SCA activities. They keep track of their progress in a book and, at the end of the program, they would get a token from the Baron and Baroness. Four young people were chosen as principal Pages and received a belt to decorate which will be returned to Their Excellencies at the completion of the program to be passed on to future pages. Baron ThorolfR and Baroness Halla were presented numerous gifts from across the Kingdom in celebration of Their investiture. These gifts included leather from the King and Queen and Barony of Rowany , a ‘gold brick’ (i.e. a wooden box painted gold with various trinkets inside) from the Barony of Innilgard, two mugs commissioned by the Barony of Politarchopolis and a basket of goods (an embroidered apron, some braid and a bottle of spiced rum) from the Household of Jorsala.
War with Innilgard
During court, Their Excellencies of Stormhold accused Their Excellencies of Innilgard from having mined gold from Stormhold lands. The accusations were seemingly backed up by the fact that Her Excellency Eva von Danzig of Innilgard was drinking at the event from an enormous golden cup and His Excellency Yevan de Leeds of Innilgard was ostentatiously decked out in multiple gold chains and rings. And, of course, the ‘gold brick’ they gifted to Their Excellencies of Stormhold.
The mine in question is located on the border between the two Baronies, near to the Canton of Cairn Fell, and Innilgard has positioned armies at the mine to protect Their claim to it.
Talk of skirmishes and war between the two Baronies are now afoot.
A couple of plays were performed for the entertainment of those gathered, with the King himself being recruited for the last play of the night.
Lady Elizabet Hunter recited a narrative she wrote, called ‘A Story of Stormhold’, as there are many stories of Stormhold, which recounted the tenures of all the Barons, Baronesses and Vicars of the Barony.
There was a Huge and Hideous Hats competition held during the night. An enormously tall hat, made by Lord Gilligan O’Tomelty, won the competition and it was noted to beat least five times bigger than its nearest competitor! For the competition, the hat was modelled by Baroness Ute von Tangermünde and later gifted to her by Lord Gilligan.
